The "Broken Formula" That Needs To Change

A dilemma seems to be afoot with most MMOs.

I recently went through the process of creating a "Perfect World" account. I downloaded the client, installed it, patched it, and created my character.

I have been given the choice of my first quest. I can either kill 10 beetles or kill 10 flowers. I choose to log out and uninstalled the game.

Isn't there an MMO that is more open ended? A quest chain that does not involve killing 10 of this or 20 of that? Is this all we have to look forward to in the future? Better graphics but the same old tired gameplay?

Perhaps "Star Trek" will change the trend, but somehow I think I will be tasked with killing 10 Klingons or destroying 20 Breen ships.

Perhaps Bioware's "Knights of the Old Republic Online" will break all conventions and give us a wonderful game, with a more compelling storyline.

One can hope at least. And hope is what keeps me playing.
