Virtual Assistant On Steroids
Do you suppose that after taking a detailed look at more than 1 billion entities, people, places, and things as well as the relationships between them that there might be quite a few insights that could be used to engineer the world’s smartest Virtual Assistant? That is the promise of the new Google Artificial Intelligence assistant.
To be named ‘Google Assistant’, this could be looked upon as the latest upgrade from Google NOW. Chances are you are least somewhat familiar with Google NOW as it rather heavily integrated into Android. If you have used Google NOW you understand that is not as personal or even audible like the competing virtual assistant from Apple bearing the name Siri. Instead Google NOW delivers cards with requested information culled from Google.com.
At the same time, you may also be aware that there is another player in this field. The giant online retailer that is Amazon has experienced what looks like runaway success with the Amazon Echo and its virtual assistant named Alexa. Like Siri, Alexa is able to understand and respond to audible questions. In other words, up until the launch of the new Google Assistant, Google was trailing a distant third in the virtual assistant field.
But all appearances suggest that the Google Assistant will be a gamechanger, at least for Google. The first thing to note is that Assistant is the capability or natural language processing. In other words, now can talk to Google Assistant and expect a useful answer. Google had this to say about Assistant: ‘….the assistant is conversational - an ongoing two-way dialog between you and Google that understands your world and helps you get things done. It makes it easy to buy movie tickets while on the go, to find that perfect restaurant for your family to grab a quick bite before the movie starts, and then help you navigate to the theater."
The big takeway here is to note that Google Assistant is conversational. That’s one. But, there’s yet another factor to consider. A factor that only a company such as Google can deliver. This is that now users of Google Assistant can ask follow up questions. Get this: there is so much artificial intelligence at work here that Assistant can not only keep track of the entire conversation but can deliver intelligence responses to follow up questions.
Chances are you immediately see the advantage that Google Assistant offers, something that as of now cannot be delivered by Siri nor Alexa. Stay tuned as the battle for the best virtual assistant continues to heat up.
